What to Wear for a Professional LinkedIn Photo (Without Overthinking It)

Your LinkedIn photo is more than just a picture — it’s the handshake before the handshake. Before anyone reads a word of your profile, they’re already sizing you up. The clothes you choose can quietly say “I’ve got this”… or not.

I’ve photographed CEOs, founders, LinkedIn Top Voices, and plenty of people who hate being in front of a camera. The truth? Looking good in your headshot has less to do with fashion trends and more to do with choosing clothes that fit the story you want to tell.

Here’s how to get it right without turning your wardrobe upside down.

1. Pick Colours That Play Nice

Camera-friendly colours are your friend. Solid tones beat busy patterns every time.

  • Blues, greys, and earthy jewel tones are universally flattering.

  • If in doubt, go mid-tone — jet black and pure white can mess with camera exposure.

  • Avoid loud neons unless you are the loud neon type.

Pro tip: bring a second outfit. Sometimes a quick change is the difference between “good” and “wow.”

2. Dress for the Room You Want to Be In

What you wear should match the environment you work in — or the one you’re aiming for.

  • Corporate & Finance: A sharp blazer, clean shirt, maybe a tie if that’s your brand.

  • Tech & Creative: Smart-casual works. Think crisp shirts, fine knits, or a cool jacket.

  • Personal Brand: If you are your brand, lean into colours, patterns, or details that make you memorable.

3. Fit > Fashion

Forget chasing trends. Well-fitted clothing will always look better on camera than whatever’s hot this month.

  • Jackets should shape your shoulders, not swallow them.

  • Shirts should sit flat at the collar and cuffs.

  • If you can move freely without adjusting something every two seconds, you’re on the right track.

4. Details Do the TalkinG

A watch, a necklace, a subtle scarf — these little things can add character without stealing the shot.

If you wear glasses, clean them. Smudges are the enemy.

5. Grooming Counts (Even If You’re a Minimalist)

You don’t need a full makeover — but a little hair styling, light powder, or tidy beard trim can take years off a photo. Most of my shoots include a professional hair and makeup option because it’s that transformative.

6. Comfort Looks Confident

You can see discomfort in a headshot. If a suit makes you feel like you’re in court, skip it. Choose clothes that feel like you — just a sharper, more put-together version.

Bottom line: Your LinkedIn photo is silent PR. It’s telling your story before you say a word. Pick clothes that make that story the one you want people to hear.

When you’re ready for a headshot that looks like you on your best day, I’m here.
